The Five Tenets of Taekwondo: A Breakdown

The Five Tenets of Taekwondo are guiding principles for Taekwondo students. In this blog post, we provide some insights on each of the tenets.

Taekwondo is about physical ability… but mostly, it’s about character.

Here at the Michigan Academy of Taekwondo, we teach our students about the Five Tenets of Taekwondo.

The Five Tenets are guiding principles every Taekwondo player ought to abide by.

In today’s blog post, we’re going to break down the Five Tenets of Taekwondo.

Courtesy

Courtesy means always being on the lookout for ways to make things easier for other people.

Whenever we notice someone could use a helping hand, we, as martial artists, are quick to offer one.

“Courtesy costs nothing, but it can mean everything to someone else.”

Holding doors, saying please and thank you, making eye contact with other people…

These are just a few of the things we can do on a daily basis to demonstrate the value we see in other people… to extend common courtesy.

Integrity

Integrity means doing the right thing even when nobody is watching.

It may be tempting to skip out on a couple reps when you’re doing an intense workout — after all, nobody’s counting except you…

But when we cut corners in life, it sits on or subconscious…

It stresses us out, causes our confidence to plummet, and in the end, it’s just the wrong thing to do!

When we’re people of integrity, our mighty actions are evidence of our high character.

Perseverance

It takes four years to earn a Black Belt at the Michigan Academy of Taekwondo, and we’re very candid with our students…

At some point in those four years, it’s going to get difficult.

And many students will want to quit at some point in their journey.

Like almost anything worthwhile in life, there will be times when it becomes difficult to keep going.

School, extracurricular activities, and even in friendships…

One of our favorite quotes is, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going."

The ability to persevere through hardship is proof of someone with strong character.

Self-Control

Human beings experience a range of emotions, including anger.

One of our favorite quotes about anger is: “In the heat of anger, pause.”

Here at MAT, we encourage our students to, when they’re angry, STOP and take several deep breaths.

We teach them not to speak or act out of anger…

Because when we’re angry, we’re not in our right mind.

And when we’re not in our right mind, we say and do things that we’ll regret later on.

Indomitable Spirit

Sometimes life can get overwhelming. In moments of overwhelm, we experience a feeling of defeat.

But in our mindsets and attitudes, we can choose not to let the pressures, stresses, and struggles overcome us…

Instead, we can see them as challenges… mere hurdles we need to find our way around.

“Indomitable” simply means that which cannot be defeated. And our spirit is the energy inside us that keeps us moving forward and becoming a better person each day.

With an indomitable spirit, even the most undesirable circumstances can be seen as an opportunity to tap into our innermost strength.

“Mat Chats” at the Michigan Academy of Taekwondo

During every kids’ class at the Michigan Academy of Taekwondo, we take about five minutes right after our warm-up to sit down with the class to talk about an important character or life skill.

Over the past couple decades, parents of our students have come to us and told us “Hey, you know what the best part of your program is? It’s the Mat Chats!”

In fact, one of our instructors was recently at Planet Fitness lifting weights and he ran into the grandfather of one of our students. The grandfather said, “My favorite thing about your classes was when you sit down with the kids and tell stories. They learned so much, and I myself loved hearing you talk about those life lessons.”

The story time he was referring to? The Message of the Week, also known as Mat Chats.

We don’t think there’s a better way than a Mat Chat to convey important life lessons and character skills.

Our typical format involves:…

A brief story

The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Tortoise and the Hare are some fan favorites…

(Especially when our instructors take the time to embellish the story.)

One of the reasons we tell stories is because it’s one of the most effective ways to get the lesson across.

If we sat down and said, “The message of this week is perseverance. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, perseverance is defined as…”

Well, we’d lose our students’ attention!

Stories are captivating, and after our young students have had a long day at school, we’ll do anything to capture their attention… including telling fun stories!

A discussion on the story’s moral

Once we’ve told the story, we start talking about the meaning and significance behind it.

We genuinely believe this also helps our students in their language arts classes at school…

And we have a theory it could help our students fall in love with storytelling and reading!

Questions & answers

We want the Mat Chat to be interactive, so we ask questions to our students to give them a chance to respond.

Our instructors are always on the lookout for students who don’t typically raise their hands during the Q&A time…

We want to make sure quiet, shy, and introverted students get a chance to speak just as much as the students who are eager to raise their hands!

A challenge to LIVE the LESSON!

At the very end of the Mat Chat, the instructor will call the students into action…

For instance, if the message of the week is courtesy, the instructor might say: “Alright guys, so this week, I want you guys to find a way to make things easier for the people around you. Hold the door for your mom or dad, carry in the groceries from the car…”

We hope you enjoyed this brief article about Mat Chats at the Michigan Academy of Taekwondo!

If you live in Northville, Novi, Plymouth, Canton, or the surrounding areas and you want to experience the life-changing impact of martial arts training, please fill out our contact form or give us a call at 248.349.6900.

We hope to see you at MAT!

So, you’re looking for martial arts classes & self-defense lessons near Farmington, Michigan?

Look no further!

The Michigan Academy of Taekwondo is conveniently located in downtown Northville, just a stone’s throw from many neighborhoods, apartments, subdivisions, and condominiums in Farmington, Michigan.

If you’re interested in learning self-defense, getting in better physical shape, and developing character traits like discipline, confidence, and focus, the Michigan Academy of Taekwondo is for you!

In this post, we’re going to give you a quick rundown of our program... and as you’ll see, we’re HUGE on self-defense, physical fitness, and character development.

Why is that?

It’s because we want parents and children in Farmington, Michigan to be fully-equipped to handle the challenges of the modern digital age.

Self-Defense Training near Farmington, Michigan

Many parents come to us and say things like…

“I want my child to be able to handle bullies at school without physical confrontation…”

“If something bad happens, I want to have the confidence to defend myself and my family…”

And to these statements we’d say…

It’s better to be safe than sorry… get self-defense training ASAP!

See, at schools (and even in workplaces), bullies are on the lookout…

They’re looking for people who seem vulnerable…

People who are shy, showing bad posture, lacking confidence…

They’re looking for the ones who do not appear to be able to defend themselves.

At MAT, we teach our students to do the following:

  • Hold their body posture high. Not only does good posture prevent future back pains and problems, but it also says to the world, “I have a positive self-image and I’m not afraid to show it.”

  • Project their voice. When someone speaks confidently and clearly and has no hesitations about being heard, bullies are less likely to see them as targets.

  • Make eye contact with other people. Nothing exudes self-confidence like being able to look someone else in the eyes and hold a meaningful conversation.

We are convinced when people dial-in their posture, voice, and ability to make eye contact, they are less likely to be seen as prey to bullies!

Now, as far as other types of self-defense situations, like getting physically attacked in public or having your house broken into…

These types of self-defense situations are fairly rare…

But in the unlikely even that should happen, wouldn’t it be nice to have the skills, tools, and tactics to handle the situation?

If you’re ready to get the self-defense training you need to protect yourself and your family, and you live in Farmington, Michigan, fill out our contact form and we’ll reach out to you with more information.

Physical Fitness: Get the Exercise You Need

Here’s the sad reality:

Children in the twenty-first century are exposed to more screens than ever before…

Which means they are potentially living more sedentary lives than ever before.

Instead of coming home and playing with toys, coloring, reading, going to the park with friends, and riding their bikes…

They’re on iPads and iPhones scrolling social media (TikTok is where great minds turn to mush), playing brainless games (Fruit Ninja is fun but it’s not real ninja training), and doing whatever else kids do on screens.

Screen-sucking, as we all know, is NOT good for our physical or mental health.

And when it comes to adults… well, many of us work desk jobs where we’re sitting in front of a screen for hours upon hours during the day…

When we go home from work, we’re chatting with friends on iMessage and Facebook Messenger.

Face it:

All this screen time has a negative impact on our posture and our overall health.

Screens are everywhere, and with artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality soon to become the norm, there is no way we can avoid adopting these types of technologies.

HOWEVER…

You can (and should) make time in your day for TONS of physical activity… including martial arts!

Martial arts offers the opportunity to build muscle, improve cardiovascular health, and fight the sedentary lifestyle offered by convenience culture!

When parents come in to have their children try out our martial arts program, we show them how our program helps children develop flexibility, agility, balance, strength, and stamina.

These are the same physical attributes they need for other sports like soccer, basketball, hockey, baseball, and football.

And adults get the same physical benefits from our program, too!

Are you ready to take full ownership of your child’s physical health… and your own?

If you live in Farmington, Michigan and you’re interested in experiencing the physical benefits of martial arts training, fill out our contact form and we’ll give you a call back!

Character & Life Skills: Discipline, Confidence, & Focus

We know for a fact the main reason why Farmington parents send their kids to martial arts classes is so they can develop great character & life skills…

Skills like goal setting, self-discipline, focus, self-confidence, self-control, respect, honesty, integrity, responsibility, accountability…

The list goes on and on…

Unfortunately, character and life skills are not really taught anywhere else!

The only other places kids might get training in life & character skills is at Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and religious youth groups.

Public & private schools do have standards for character development, but because the focus in schools is so much on academic achievement, character development ends up being an afterthought.

Here at the Michigan Academy of Taekwondo, our program is founded on the Five Tenets of Taekwondo:

  1. Courtesy

  2. Integrity

  3. Perseverance

  4. Self-Control

  5. Indomitable Spirit

We are HUGE on the Five Tenets of Taekwondo. We expect all our students — White Belts through Black Belts, regardless of their age — to uphold these virtues.

And we believe one of the strengths of our program is that we don’t just teach kids about these character traits in some academic fashion…

We actually create situations in the classroom where the students experience them…

Then, we coach students to apply these skills outside of the dojang…

So that at home, at school, and in their own self-image, they’re empowered by higher levels of all these skills.

Do you want your child to gain the character & life skills needed to thrive in the challenging modern digital age?

If so, fill out our contact form and one of our friendly instructors will reach out to you!

So that at home, at school, and in their own self-image, they’re empowered by higher levels of all these skills.

Self-Defense Training near Novi, Michigan

If you’re ready to get the self-defense training you need to protect yourself and your family, and you live in Novi, Michigan, fill out our contact form and we’ll reach out to you with more information.

If you live in Novi, Michigan and you’re interested in experiencing the physical benefits of martial arts training, fill out our contact form and we’ll give you a call back!

Character & Life Skills: Discipline, Confidence, & Focus

We know for a fact the main reason why Novi parents send their kids to martial arts classes is so they can develop great character & life skills…
